Amerika in den 50er Jahren. Nach einem Autounfall verliert der von den Kommunistenjägern unschuldig verfolgte B-Movie-Autor Peter Appleton sein Gedächtnis. Nur knapp dem Tod entronnen, landet er im beschaulichen Küstenstädtchen Lawson, wo ihn alle für "Luke", den im Krieg verschollenen Sohn des alten Harry, halten. Überglücklich beginnt dieser sogleich, mit Peter sein heruntergekommenes Kino zu renovieren. Als eines Tages Peters eigener Film aufgeführt wird, löst sich dessen Gedächtnisblockade.
