'We Bought a Zoo' is gebaseerd op het waargebeurde verhaal van voormalig Guardian journalist Benjamin Mee (Matt Damon) die na de dood van zijn vrouw een vervallen dierentuin op het Amerikaanse platteland koopt van zijn laatste spaargeld.
