Plectrumelectrum is the 36th full-length studio album by Prince. It was composed, recorded and produced by Prince and 3rdEyeGirl and was released on 30 September, 2014 (29 September, 2014 in Europe). It was made available for pre-order on iTunes USA, Amazon and on a dedicated Warner Bros Records website on 25 August, 2014. Available formats are CD + Digital MP3 bundle, MP3 and WAV. On 29 September, 2014 the album was made available on Spotify streaming platform. Late November, 2014 the album was released on vinyl format.
The 3rdEyeGirl band featured on the album began working together in December, 2012, indicating a large portion of the album was recorded in 2013 and first part of 2014. The title track, „Plectrumelectrum“, was first streamed in March, 2013, as a rehearsal video. „Pretzelbodylogic“ and „Funknroll“ were both played at a listening party for the album in February, 2014.
Initial information suggested that Prince did not appear on lead vocals for most of the album, and that the album would be released by 3rdEyeGirl alone, but over time it appears that many tracks have been added to as well as removed from the album, with the album finally being announced as a "Prince and 3rdEyeGirl" project.
Tracks known to have been recorded by the band between 2012 and early 2014, but not on the album include „Check The Record“, „Pulla Wagon“, „Shade Of Umber“, and a re-recording of „The Breakdown“. The album was recorded and mixed at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA and at Studio One, London, England.
Two singles have been released with the credit "Prince and 3rdEyeGirl" – „Fixurlifeup“ (initially released with the artist credit "3rdEyeGirl feat. Prince" before the credit was reversed), and „Pretzelbodylogic“. On 4 September, 2014, „Whitecaps“ was made available as pre-order digital single. On 20 September, 2014 „Anotherlove“ and „Marz“ were made available to download on iTunes Germany.
The album reached number 1 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart, and 8 on The Billboard 200. It also entered the main charts in Europe, Australia and Japan, reaching top 10 positions in Austria, Denmark, France, Japan, Norway, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
PlectrumElectrum is a classic band record, with 3RDEYEGIRL which include Prince, Donna Grantis (guitar), Hannah Ford Welton (drums) and Ida Nielsen (bass). Recorded live and in analog the album is an electrifying funk-rock statement. Many of the tracks from PlectrumElectrum were performed live on the Hit & Run tours of the UK earlier this year incendiary performances in a series of historic venues which led The Guardian to declare: „These are performances by one of the greatest funk-rock bands ever“. The group was showered in 5-star reviews from all major reviewing media.
