That coffee chain Starbucks would issue a compilation of chillout trip-hop is patently absurd. It's as counterproductive as positioning a humidifier and a dehumidifier face to face in the same room. Or perhaps Ambient Luxe is intended as the downer that takes the edge off Starbucks consumers wired on espresso. It's as if Starbucks hired Elvis' personal physician, Dr. Nick, as its chief programmer. In any case, Ambient Luxe is a sturdy if predictable collection of placid downtempo electronica designed for consumers who've either never heard the stuff before, or with a Portishead or Zero 7 disc in their collections. Highlights include Kruder & Dorfmeister's "Definition," Nicola Conte's "Bossa per Due," and Apollo 440's "The Man with the Harmonica."
