Der Farmersohn Claude aus Oklahoma kommt vor seiner militärischen Musterung und dem Einzug nach Vietnam nach New York. Im Central-Park trifft er auf eine Hippie-Truppe und wird in ihr ausgelassenes Bürgerschreck-Spiel miteinbezogen. Der schüchterne Claude verliebt sich in das vorbeireitende Mädchen Sheila. Daher verschafft ihm der Hippie-Wortführer Berger Zugang zu ihrem Haus. Doch die erwachende Liebe findet schon bald ein Ende, als Claude zum Militär muß. Der harte Drill in einem Camp in Nevada macht ihm zu schaffen, aber seine Freunde sind schon auf dem Weg zu ihm. Berger gelangt als Offizier verkleidet ins Camp und holt Claude heraus, damit dieser Sheila treffen kann. Währenddessen wird die Einheit jedoch nach Vietnam überführt, wo Berger in Claudes Uniform fällt.
