The Goon is a lot of fun! Eric Powell's The Goon is basically about this real tough guy who has a sadistic midget for a friend and beats up zombies ... oh, and he's got a humongous overbite! This isn't a serious book, but refreshingly unselfconscious, wacky and very satirical. The humour is crude and nothing is sacred - it's all just about having fun. There are quite a few bizarre characters and the feel of it is somewhat reminiscent of Dick Tracy - just with zombies. To give you an idea of the type of characters there are, there's a giant dead monkey and a character who's a midget, with one massive arm, who beats people with a bowling ball!
What makes it so enjoyable to read is that you don't know what's going to happen next! Powell doesn't put any limits on his imagination and so stories often take a surprising turn. But its not all just jokes, there are plots and the greater story develops over each issue. Although Powell refines his art and storytelling in later books this is still a lot of fun, primarily because it is so raw. What's also cool is you get to find out The Goon's origin in this one and the book also contains the extra feature: The Evolution of The Goon, where Powell explains how he came up with the idea and shows how he developed it. It's really cool to see the early drawings and of how he refined the look of the character.
The Goon is great light-hearted fun and a very smooth read. A nice break from other comics!
